Scientific internship at NSU and prospects for cooperation between universities
12/7/2022
My name is Seitov Ruslan, I am a 2nd year master student of the Department of the Far East of the Faculty of Oriental Studies. I completed my undergraduate studies at Novosibirsk State University (NSU), and this semester I visited my alma mater again as part of a foreign scientific internship.
The internship lasted two short but eventful weeks, from November 21 to December 2. In the first week, I participated in the international conference "Archaeological cultures of Siberia in the context of cross-cultural contacts in Eurasia", where I made a presentation. At the conference, organized with the support of the History of the Fatherland Foundation, I represented KazNU and Kazakhstan as one of the six participating countries. As a result of the conference, a collection of articles was published, which included my article "The image of the "Northern barbarians" in Japan in the Tokugawa era (1603-1868)".
In the second week of the internship, I got acquainted with the NSU master's program for historians and orientalists, attended seminars and lectures. It is interesting to compare the experience of studying at two universities: oriental studies at KazNU are more applied and studies modernity, while at NSU it is more fundamental and classical, and many professors specialize in art history and archeology. Nevertheless, both of these areas are important for the development of both the scientific and commercial component of oriental studies, so one of the goals of the internship was to establish contacts between professors and teachers of the faculties of KazNU and NSU.
I talked with the head of the Department of Oriental Studies and the supervisor of my thesis, Voytishek Elena Edmundovna, and conveyed warm greetings to her from the dean of my faculty. Elena Edmundovna is also interested in friendship between the faculties and suggested several forms of cooperation - participation in international conferences of universities, open lectures, internships. At the faculty at KazNU, these proposals were met with great optimism. Moreover, the dean of the department Natalya Borisovna suggested thinking about a double degree program.
The issue of cooperation between universities is all the more relevant because my internship coincided with the news about the planned opening of a branch of NSU on the basis of KazNU. So far, it is planned to open technical and natural science specialties, but I think that it is in our power to establish close and fruitful cooperation in the field of oriental studies.
In general, I believe that this scientific, and in a sense diplomatic, internship was more than successful, and the main thing now is to continue working to establish and strengthen relations. I am grateful to the teachers of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of KazNU for their support in completing the internship.
I will tell you more about Oriental studies at NSU and the prospects for cooperation at the meetings of the student club of the Oriental Club faculty. You can follow the club's news on the pages in social networks:
