Korea unification – facts and prospects

Today, the international roundtable on the topic «Korea unification – facts and prospects» held by International Center for the Strategic Research Development of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in cooperation with the Central Asian Representative Office of the Consultative Council on Peaceful and Democratic Unification of Korea tool place in Almaty.

The significance of the event was emphasized by the participation of the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Kim Hung Soo, as well as experts from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea. The round table was also attended by representatives of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Institute of Oriental Studies named after R.B. R.B.Suleymenov and Military Engineering Institute of Radio Electronics and Communications of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The roundtable discussed current issues and prospects of peaceful unification of North and South Korea, and evaluated the geopolitical processes taking place on the Korean Peninsula. Experts also reviewed the state of relations between the two countries in context of their integration prospects and presented forecasts of the impact of the two Koreas on the regional situation.

Consul General Mr. Kim Hung Soo in his speech stressed the importance of a peaceful and democratic character within the process of unifying of North and South Koreas as an essential element for maintaining regional stability and security. At the same time, he expressed gratitude to Kazakhstan for the position supporting the peace process of unification of two countries.

The Head of the Representative Office Mr. Lee Jea Wan noted a great role of scientific community of Kazakhstan in the process of integration of Korean society.

He also confirmed the intentions to continue cooperation on mutual implementation of research and other projects dedicated to dialogue between the two Koreas.

The Director General of the International Center for the Strategic Research Development Nurzhan Nurakhmetov, stressed the need to intensify cooperation between Kazakhstan’s and Korea’s scientific communities as part of the processes that contribute to the establishment and consolidation of peace on the Korean peninsula and the unification of two countries.
