Kazakhstan Joins the Map of World Journalism Study

The Faculty of Journalism of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University has joined the global research conducted by the Worlds of Journalism Study Association (WJS).

The Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS) is an academically driven project coordinated by Professor Thomas Hanitzsch that was founded in 2010 to regularly assess the state of journalism throughout the world. The study’s main objective is to help journalism researchers, media practitioners and policy makers better understand the worldviews and changes that are taking place in the professional views of journalists, the conditions and limitations under which journalists operate, and the social functions of journalism in a changing world.

According to its Statute, the mission of the Association is to support academic research to assess the state of journalism around the world. The WJS partners include International Federation of Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, European Journalism Training Association, and many more.

The first pilot study was conducted in 2007-2011, and the second wave of WJS continued throughout 2012 to 2016. The study brought together researchers from 67 countries from around the world and project network interviewed over 27,500 journalists based on a common methodological framework.

The Worlds of Journalism Study offers a groundbreaking analysis of the different ways in which journalists perceive their duties, their relationship to society and government, and the nature and meaning of their work.

The third wave of the Worlds of Journalism Study (2020-2022) currently involves researchers from more than 110 countries and one of those countries will be Kazakhstan. The Faculty of Journalism of KazNU is looking forward to make a contribution to this global study. At the moment, a base of respondents is being created with a forecast of 2500 journalists covering the whole country.
