DISCUSSED TOPICAL PROBLEMS OF UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT

At a meeting with Zhanseit Tuimebayev, Chairman of the Board-Rector of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, professors and teachers from among the veterans of the university shared their views and gave suggestions on topical issues of the university's development.

During the event, issues of improving the educational process, developing research activities, providing scientific centers and laboratories with modern equipment were discussed.

Kuralai Baizakova, Professor of the Faculty of International Relations, Al-Farabi KazNU:

It is necessary to revise the selection procedure for foreign professors

- American, European and other research centers have been successfully operating at the university for many years. It is necessary that KazNU continues to move towards integration into the international scientific and educational space. Some work needs adjustments. In particular, it is necessary to revise the procedure for the selection of foreign professors, their participation in the leadership of PhD doctoral students.

The young generation of teachers and scientists needs good motivation, it is necessary to allocate visiting grants, thanks to which novice scientists could be trained in the best universities in the world and participate in international scientific projects. It is necessary to ensure continuity, support talented youth and involve them in science. It is also necessary to give a new incentive to hold international conferences, to pay attention to issues related to the publication of scientific articles in the publications of the university, in particular, in the "Bulletin of KazNU".

I cannot but mention the sore point of the university ranking. I believe that separate criteria should be developed for the natural sciences and humanities faculties. In general, the rating assessment of the teacher's performance and achievements is a good incentive mechanism.

Kalkaman Zhumagulov,

Professor of the Faculty of History, Archeology and Ethnology, KazNU named after al-Farabi:

Our professors and associate professors must be experts

- Our professors and associate professors should be experts on various topical issues, be able to give competent comments, for example, in a pandemic, the opinions of specialists and biologists are valuable. I would also like to emphasize the importance of cooperation with renowned foreign universities. KazNU has developed the practice of scientific internships abroad, participation in world-class conferences, double-degree educational programs are being implemented with the world's leading universities. And this area of work must be continued, since it raises the international prestige of the university.

To develop science and involve young people in it, we need research centers, expansion of international cooperation programs. There are three research centers at the Faculty of History, Archeology and Ethnology. One of them is The History of the Great Steppe. Its financing for the project was carried out for three years, now further work remains a big question. Fundamental research has been going on in European universities for decades. Therefore, it is important to continue what has been started, and this issue requires the support of the university administration.

Eleonora Suleimenova,

Professor of the Faculty of Philology and World Languages, KazNU named after al-Farabi:

It is necessary to create conditions for the training of foreign students

- Today the veterans of KazNU have gathered. Everyone is worried, rooting for our university, making interesting proposals aimed at transforming it. As the academic director of American programs at the Kazakh National University, I would like to draw your attention to this area.

For 7 years, I have been supervising an American program, within the framework of which students from US universities come to Kazakhstan, to KazNU to study Russian and Kazakh languages, the history of Kazakhstan. They are rigorously selected according to the requirements of the program. Currently, due to the pandemic, they are studying remotely.

The foundation of this program was once laid by Dan Davidson, who headed this direction of the American Council for International Education. More recently, it became known that the council won a grant for 4 years, in connection with which it is planned to increase the number of students. Next year, 40 people will study at KazNU, and in the future this figure will double. In this regard, it is necessary to create conditions for the training of foreign students. In particular, to allocate more audiences, since according to the requirements in the group there should be no more than 5 people.
