KAZNU CELEBRATED THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF M.TOMANOV

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted an international scientific and theoretical conference "Diachronic paradigm in Turkic studies", dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Doctor of Philology, Professor Markhabat Tomanov.

The conference was attended by the Chairman of the Board - Rector of KazNU. al-Farabi Zhanseit Kanseitovich Tuymebaev, scientists, Turkologists of the USA, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Tajikistan, Georgia, descendants of M.Tomanov, faculty and students of the university.

The conference opened with a welcoming speech by the head of the university, Zhanseit Tuymebayev. In his speech, the rector especially noted the contribution of M. Tomanov to the development of Kazakh linguistics and Turkic studies. “Markhabat Tomanov was my teacher, supervisor of the thesis. The scientist fruitfully worked in the field of syntax, stylistics and historical grammar of modern Kazakh and the language of ancient Turkic written monuments. Doctor of Philology took an active part in compiling Russian-Kazakh dictionaries. At KazNU, he lectured on the topic “Historical grammar of the Kazakh language” and brought up quite a few educated students,” said the head of the university.

Zhanseit Tuymebayev also stressed that it is important to study and promote the works of such scientists as Markhabat Tomanov. Dean of the Faculty of Philology Bayan Umirbekovna Zholdasbekova delivered a congratulatory speech. “10 years ago, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the professor, an auditorium named after M. Tomanov was opened at the Faculty of Philology. Our goal was to revive the name of the great scientist. Young people should know about such prominent personalities, his works and rich heritage are very important for the younger generation. I believe that the invaluable scientific works of the scientist will serve the future scientific and theoretical development of the Kazakh language for a long time,” Bayan Umirbekovna emphasized.

In addition, Professor of the University of Bashkent Suyer Eker and Professor of the University of Madison, USA Schamiloglu Uli spoke in an online format. They noted the special role of the valuable works of M. Tomanov and wished the participants of the conference successful and fruitful work. During the meeting, 4 students of the Kazakh National University named after al-Farabi were awarded certificates on the appointment of a scholarship named after Professor Markhabat Tomanov. They were presented by the daughter of an outstanding scientist Nuria Markhabatovna. The conference ended with panel discussions.
