The XI Republican student Olympiad of knowledge on Oriental Studies, which is the annual event was held at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of KazNU named after al-Farabi. The number of participants in the section of Korean studies this year was 27 students from KazNU named after al-Farabi, Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and ENU named after L.N.Gumilyov.

The Olympiad was held in two rounds. The task of the first round was to perform a test which task on language skills, history, regional geography and writing an essay in Korean on the topic “What is the meaning of your life?”. According to the results of the first round, 10 people out of 27 successfully passed to the second round of the Olympiad, the mission of second round is to present to the jury their presentations on the topic “If I had done benchmarking from Korea”.

According to the cooperation agreement signed in 2016 by the “Contemporary China Research Center” of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the “Contemporary China Research Center” of Wuhan University, the centers will hold an international symposium at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty on May 3-4, 2019. The symposium aims to promote mutual understanding of the “The Belt and Road” and “The bright road” through exchanges between scholars from both countries. Through in-depth discussions, the symposium will deepen understanding of the current situation, problems and development prospects of cooperation between Kazakhstan and China in various fields，promote academic exchanges between the two countries and enhance friendship and cooperation between the two sides.

The Department of Chinese Studies held the annual Republican subject Olympiad among students of higher educational institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the specialty "Oriental Studies".

The 11^th Republic Student Olympiad on the specialty “Oriental Studies” took place at the Oriental Studies faculty of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

This year’s Olympiad was sponsored by university of Tsukuba and professor Ninomiya Takashi from Tsukuba university. Furthermore, the director of Ichikawa Japanese language school Mr. Naoyuki Kanka has participated as a special guest. The total number of Japanese Language Section participants were 18 students from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakh University of International Relations and World Languages and Eurasian National University.

This spring, in the framework of the winter school, the Far East Department has welcom on the campus of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University 47 students from Japan. Among them were senior students from the University of Tokyo, Univesity of Tsukuba, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Kochi University.

Graduate of Kyoto University, associate professor of the Far East Department, Ph.D. Akhapov E.A according to the results of the survey among Japanese guests, he left the most vivid impression as a lecturer of the course “Regional Studies. Politics, economics and culture of Central Asia”, which also provides for field research in Kazakhstan.

On March 13, 2019, a meeting with representatives of the travel company «Like Almaty» was held at the Middle East and South Asia Department of the Faculty of Oriental Studies. The meeting was attended by students and undergraduates-Arabists of the 1st and 2nd courses.

The guests at the meeting were: the representative of company «Like Almaty» Zaikenov Nursultan, the general director of the travel agency “HIKMET TRAVEL” Duysenov Aidos, the marketing specialist, the founder of the marketing agency Abdullayev Rasul, as well as the dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies Paltore Yқtiyar Moldatoreuly and the head of the Arabic department Koptіleuova Dina Turgalievna.

A student of the Department of the Far East under the program "FY 2018 METI Japan Internship Program, Technical Cooperation & Emerging Market Development Program" organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI), had an internship in Tokyo in the company Chiyoda Technol Corporation (株式会社 田 田 テ ク ノ ル). This trading company carries out its activities in the field of nuclear energy and is engaged in the production of special equipment for use in this industry. Basically, the company performs the role of a business intermediary between the customer-customer of the product and the manufacturing company.

The Department of the Far East met the newly appointed Consul General of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Kim Heung-soo at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

A special lecture from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Almaty was held this year in a very warm atmosphere. After meeting with an important guest by Korean customs like a national dress and a Korean bow, first-year students showed their skills in Korean and conducted a tour of the classrooms of Department of the Far East.

Ph.D., acting Associate Professor of the Department of Chinese Studies, Saparbayeva Nurzhan Baltazhanovna from 10 to 22 March, held lectures on Chinese at the Ogorov Research University of the Republic of Mordovia.
