The students of the Physical-Technical Faculty observed the "Bloody Moon". 31-th of January at the same time was held a Supermoon, a total lunar eclipse and a "blue moon" - the second full Moon in a month. The last time this combination was observed in 1982, it will be repeated only in 2037 y.

The Alliance of universities which brought together 38 universities was created in Almaty. The main goal of the Alliance is to focus teachers, researchers and students of higher educational institutions in the implementation of the program "Рухани Жаңғыру" ("Spiritual Renewal"). One of the main initiators of its creation became al-Farabi KazNU, where its first meeting was held.  

Rector Galym Mutanov met with Vice-President of the University of Lorraine Karl Tombre at Al-Farabi KazNU.

The specialty "Space engineering and technologies" is new in Kazakhstan, it was introduced only in 2009. In 2010, the al-Farabi KazNU received a license for training bachelors in this specialty at the Department on Mechanics and had enrollment the first set of students.

On January 31, 2018 with the participation of the rector of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University Galym Mutanov and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the Republic of Kazakhstan Shri Prabhat Kumar, a solemn presentation of the result of the work of four specialists of the Middle East and South Asia Department of Oriental Studies faculty was held. 

At the Faculty of Oriental Studies of al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the opening of the Karamchand Mohandas Gandhi Center took place. The opening ceremony was attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the Republic of Kazakhstan Sri Prabhat Kumar, Consul General of the Republic of India in Almaty Sri Martin Sirias Slemens, Rector of al-Farabi Kazakh National University Galym Mutanov, Military Attaché of the Republic of India in the Republic of Kazakhstan Colonel Nalawade, Deans, teachers and students of the University.

The Far East Department of the Kazakh National University named after al-Farabi conducted the second scientific on-line conference on the theme: "Japanese Studies in Kazakhstan and Japan", as part of the "Campus Campus" project with the University of Tsukuba (Japan).

On January 29, 2018 in the rector's office at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was held ceremony "Shinhan Bank Kazakhstan" in Almaty.

On January 29^th, 2018 in rectorate KazNU named after al-Farabi, students graduate of Department of the Far East were awarded with Korea Foundation Fellowship for Graduate Studies.

International Winter School of Journalism and Communication has been held for five years in the mountainous region of the Zailiysky Alatau, not far from Almaty.
