Law under Pandemic Conditions
5/25/2020KazNU has hosted an International Online Conference entitled «Law and Human Rights during the Pandemic», which discussed current issues of distance legal education, realization of human rights in quarantine and administration of justice in different countries at this time.
The event was organized by the Research Institute for Human Rights with the support of the Association of European Lawyers, the International Commission of Jurists, and the Centre for Legal Policy Studies and «De Facto» Law Firm.
The event has brought together over 300 participants and speakers from 17 countries: Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, Belarus, Spain, France, Germany, Ukraine, Switzerland, Poland, Lithuania, Georgia, etc.
The intensive program of the Conference consisted of four sessions. During the first session, the speakers discussed new formats and opportunities for lawyers to work remotely, distance legal education and professional development. The second session was devoted to the issues of implementation of human rights under quarantine and state of emergency. Peculiarities of the implementation of justice in different countries in the context of the pandemic were discussed in the third session. The fourth session addressed the legal implications and impact of the state of emergency on the implementation of various obligations. The lawyers and legal personnel shared their practical experience in addressing emerging challenges.
This is the first international event organized by the Research Institute for Human Rights, recently established under Al-Farabi KazNU. The main objectives of the Institute’s activities are: development and protection of human rights and independence of the legal profession; promotion of legislative reforms; increasing the capacity of lawyers to protect human rights; development of citizens’ demand for fair justice; improving the quality of justice and increasing confidence in the judicial system.
