9/15/2021

Chairman of the Board-Rector of Al-Farabi KazNU Zhanseit Tuimebayev met with university scientists who were members of the State Commission for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repression in Almaty. The meeting discussed the progress of the research, as well as ways to provide comprehensive support to scientists in their scientific work.

The head of the educational institution, Zhanseit Tuimebayev, emphasized the importance of the project, which is being implemented at the state level in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev. He noted that on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the country's independence, the relevance of work to fill the "blank spots" in history through the political rehabilitation of victims of political repression has increased. At the same time, the rector highly appreciated the capabilities of KazNU scientists and noted that the university would create full-fledged conditions.

At the meeting, the scientists dwelled on the specifics of working with previously classified documentation in specialized and state archival institutions in Almaty and shared their plans for the future. The tasks of the commission include identification and substantive study of archival sources and thematic materials. The results are presented to the Republican Commission for consideration. The results of the work will be summarized in collections of scientific articles and documents.

The members of the commission also noted that the metropolis occupies a special place in the history of the twentieth century. It is reported that descendants of Turksib and builders of various industries live here. During the years of mass famine, the city took care of hundreds of homeless children and gave them a start in life. However, according to scientists, it was here in the 1920s-1930s that many leaders of the Kazakh Republic were arrested. In the post-war decades, many members of the national intelligentsia, including scientists and professors, suffered from persecution.

Candidate of Historical Sciences, Professor Gulnar Mukanova: “Today the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan includes the descendants of ethnic groups deported to their place of residence. In addition, descendants of victims of innocent repressions live in Almaty. Their memories are of great importance. Our common task is to inform the population and contribute to the official full rehabilitation of compatriots, ”the scientist emphasized the importance of the materials of the commission for Kazakhstanis and the scale of the work being done.

Ualikhan Akhatov, Candidate of Law, Associate Professor: “It is gratifying that teachers from the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, representatives of higher education and science of the country, take an active part in the responsible campaign at the state level. The university provides an opportunity for professors-teachers in the working group to show their experience, knowledge and enthusiasm, doing research, ”he said, noting that the commission members also receive additional material assistance from the government.

At the end of the meeting, the rector wished the researchers good luck and expressed confidence that the works of scientists are a real breakthrough in national historical science. The members of the commission, in turn, thanked the leadership of the university for the opportunity to study science in depth, freeing them from additional academic loads.
