3/4/2022

Al-Farabi KazNU will continue to lead the Global Hub of the United Nations “Academic Impact” Program (UNAI) for Sustainable Development. This was announced by the Head of the Department of Partnerships and Global Interactions of the "Academic Impact" program of the UN Robert Skinner. This is of particular importance in the year of the 30th anniversary of Kazakhstan's accession to the UN.

In his official address, R. Skinner noted: “KazNU has represented itself strongly as a UNAI Hub, and we look forward to our continuing relationship. ... We are grateful for KazNU’s contribution to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as the fundamental and overall principle of promoting sustainability through higher education."

Al-Farabi KazNU headed the Global Hub in 2014. This undoubtedly contributes to strengthening the role of Kazakhstan as one of the key figures in the international process of solving global problems and promoting the idea of the Head of the State K. Tokayev to turn the city of Almaty into a Regional Hub of Multilateral Diplomacy and Sustainable Development.

The long-term systematic work of the university in this direction, the achievements, scientific and educational potential of the institution largely determined the choice of the UN. This is evidence of strong trust of an authoritative international organization, the leading role of the university in the field of sustainability, which is a global trend in the development of the entire human civilization.

It should be noted that in 2011 KazNU was the first among the universities of Central Asia to join the program "Academic Impact", aimed at supporting ten internationally recognized UN principles related to human rights, literacy, sustainable development and conflict resolution. With the support of the UN, an international scientific and theoretical conference "The Changing Nature of Conflict in the 21st Century" was held.

In 2012, KazNU was the only CIS university to hold its section at the RIO+20 Global Millennium Summit in Brazil, presenting the Green Bridge Through Generations project. Besides, with the support of the UN Office in Kazakhstan, KazNU became a part of the Global Student game program "Model UN - New Silk Way".

In 2018, KazNU together with the UN Alliance of Civilizations and the Representation of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UN, hosted the international conference in New York at the UN Headquarters on the problems of Global Citizenship and presented the legacy of the Great Thinker Abu Nasr Al-Farabi to the world community. With the personal participation of the ex-UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Institute for Sustainable Development was established at the university to promote the Global Hub.

An important international event was in 2020 in cooperation with the UN Alliance of Civilizations – the conference "Mind for Peace", dedicated to the 1150th anniversary of the great Al-Farabi and the 75th anniversary of the UN with the participation of the UN Under-Secretary-General Fabrizio Hochschild and the High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations Miguel Angel Moratinos.

The activities of KazNU at the head of the Global Hub of the UN “Academic Impact” Program on Sustainable Development make a great contribution to the image of the country's promotion at a high international level.
