COOPERATION OF KAZNU WITH THE EARTH INSTITUTE AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

The Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi hosted a meeting with the director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, Yanis Ben Amor.

Welcoming the guest, Chairman of the Board – Rector of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Zhanseit Tuimebayev acquainted him with the main areas of cooperation with leading universities of the world and the activities of a research university aimed at improving global competitiveness and training highly qualified specialists in demand.

Currently more than ten agreements have been signed between KazNU and leading universities, research centers, associations, and non-governmental organizations in the United States and various educational programs and scientific and innovative joint projects are being successfully implemented. The long-term cooperation of the university with the American Council, which dates back to 2014 was noted. KazNU annually accepts students from different universities in America for one-year and summer internship programs. During this period 340 students from the US were trained by the following programs: “Flagship” and “Russian Language and International Diplomacy”.

Since 2011 a joint program of KazNU and the Earth Institute of Columbia University has been implemented MDP/Global Classroom, uniting 24 leading universities of the world. Global classroom is online courses that promote interdisciplinary collaboration and allow students and professors from all over the world to participate in collective assignments and practical training. On the basis of this program, courses are launched in English for undergraduates and doctoral students of KazNU.

During the meeting, it was noted that in order to improve the human capital index, KazNU promotes fundamental education and various fields of science through the exchange of experience with leading universities of the world. Over the past two years, eight experts from the USA have been invited to KazNU to give lectures and conduct research within the framework of the program of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On attracting foreign scientists to universities in Kazakhstan".

In turn, the director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, Yanis Ben Amor spoke about the activities of the institute and expressed readiness to further develop bilateral cooperation. At the end of the event, the parties exchanged views and agreed to expand the collaboration. Also, the leadership of KazNU invited Janis Ben Amor as a speaker for a leadership lecture for university students.
