MODEL OF GRADUATING STUDENT

Upon completion of this program, it is expected that students will be able to:
1. Use fundamental training in research, academic, organizational and other professional areas of Oriental Studies to create specific measurable results in the form of scientific, academic and creative products;
2. Systematize and interpret scientific theories, methods of analysis of current historical, political, socio-economic and cultural processes of the development of the modern East for the preparation of informational and analytical materials on current and forecasted events in eastern countries;
3. Analyze the trends of modern science, critically evaluate various theories, concepts and approaches, identify promising areas of research in the framework of specific works - dissertations, reports, articles;
4. Formulate and solve modern scientific and practical problems, develop applied projects and programs in native and foreign languages that meet international and domestic standards and requirements;
5. Generate the process of communication, apply the technique of bilateral interpretation and translation from Eastern languages and into Eastern languages in different genres, demonstrating various translation strategies;
6. Eeffectively carry out scientific projects, apply modern information technologies, including methods for obtaining, processing and storing scientific information, methods of statistical analysis, reporting skills, interpretation of data in native and foreign languages;
7. Develop skills in modern oriental languages, as well as Kazakh, Russian and Western languages at a level sufficient for international cooperation and joint research;
8. In the process of preparing essays, annotations, summaries on the topic of scientific research systematize international academic standards, demonstrate their results at a professional scientific level;
9. Integrate and analyze independently acquired new knowledge for the preparation of analytical materials and recommendations, using the relevant literature in the field of Oriental Studies, and information materials on the studied regions;
10. Create new curricula and develop innovative methods of organizing the educational process in higher education;
11. Contribute through original research to the framework of existing knowledge in the field of Oriental Studies and the study of a particular region, to prepare a series of publications on the topic of scientific research;
12. In various kinds of publications, show an independent thinking and interpretation of cultural, historical, linguistic discourses, as well as an understanding of others, including Eastern cultures and identities in the past and / or in the present.

  • Description - The purpose of the discipline is to develop the skills necessary for writing research and analytical texts in accordance with the rules established within the domestic and international scientific communities. Students will study: methods and features of the presentation of the results of scientific activity in the form of abstracts, articles, reports, as well as doctoral dissertations. The training course is aimed at studying and observing modern standards of organization, structuring and designing scientific publications on the Oriental Studies’ issues in academic journals of the Republic of Kazakhstan and abroad.

Fundamental Problems and Concepts of Modern Oriental Studies

  • Description - The purpose of the discipline: to form the ability to analyze the basic theories and concepts of modern oriental studies to interpret the fundamental problems and paradigms of studying the East. During the course study, students will have the ability to: - analyze the main theories and concepts of modern Oriental Studies to interpret the fundamental problems and paradigms of studying the East in the process of creating specific scientific projects and publications; - classify the sociopolitical and sociocultural processes, to reveal the specifics of their development in Eastern socium in the preparation of analytical materials; - systematize the concepts of world-system analysis, global studies, modernization in Eastern societies in the course of writing a dissertation research; - determine the processes occurring in the countries of the East, in the context of world civilizations; - evaluate the basic theoretical concepts, dynamics, problems in key areas of oriental science using them as a theoretical justification in fundamental and applied research. During the study of the discipline students will learn following aspects: The concept of the subject and object of science on the fundamental problems of the Eastern countries. The concepts of "state" and "society" in historical sciences. Limits of the development of traditional society. The historical emergence of a modern state in the East. World political processes (globalization, democratization, integration and regionalization) and the countries of the East. Problems of the modern world system on the whole: international security, the environment, the resources of the modern world, conflicts and their solving, national relations and nationalism. Oriental studies of the 21st century. The state at the breaking point of the epochs: from the traditional to the modern. Eastern states in the Second World War. Changes in the world geopolitics of the XX c. in the 90's. The policy of the US and European powers in the East. The world community and the Eastern states. "The Islamic factor" in world politics. The idea of a theocratic state and the Islamic world. National self-consciousness of the peoples of the East. The emergence of the East-West dichotomy.

Methodology of Area Studies (in English)

  • Description - The purpose of the discipline: to form the ability to use the methodology and skills of regional studies. The training course forms the theoretical foundations and practical research methods of the regions of the East to analyze the most urgent problems and situations, to create a source study base. During the course study, students will have the ability to: - demonstrate the developed theoretical and methodological thinking, which was formed on the basis of the study of the main methodological theories and concepts of domestic and foreign oriental studies in specific scientific publications or lectures on regional research topics; - critically evaluate, in the introductory part of research projects, theoretical and methodological approaches used in Oriental Sudies and Area Studies, theories and methods used in modern scientific projects; - make their original contribution in the field of specific empirical research, using acquired practical skills and knowledge, the basic provisions and methods of social and human sciences in solving professional problems; - in the course of carrying out specific research projects, demonstrate knowledge and understanding of macro- and micro-political processes at the regional level and the political realities of the modern world; - prepare analytical materials, contextualize the current political situation, make political predictions; - in the format of publications or public reports, summarize and give a reasonable assessment of various scientific interpretations of regional events, phenomena and concepts in national, interregional and global contexts. During the study of the discipline students will learn following aspects: the main criticism toward Area studies; the brief history of Area studies; anthropology research methods; geography research methods; economy research methods in Area studies, the cross-regional comparison in Area studies, the inter-regional comparison; the intra-regional comparison in Area studies; fieldwork in Area studies; the contribution of sociology and psychology to Area studies; the demands to re-conceptualize Area studies in post-modern or ‘post-structural’ terms.

  • Description - The main purpose of "PhD thesis writing and defence": of a doctoral dissertation is the formation of the doctoral students' ability to disclose the content of research work for the defense of the thesis. During the study of course, doctoral student's should be competent in: 1. to substantiate the content of new scientifically grounded theoretical and experimental results that allow to solve a theoretical or applied problem or are a major achievement in the development of specific scientific directions; 2. explain the assessment of the completeness of the solutions to the tasks assigned, according to the specifics of the professional sphere of activity; 3. they can analyze alternative solutions for solving research and practical problems and assess the prospects for implementing these options; 4. apply the skills of writing scientific texts and presenting them in the form of scientific publications and presentations. 5. to plan and structure the scientific search, clearly highlight the research problem, develop a plan / program and methods for its study, formalize, in accordance with the requirements of the State Educational Establishment, the scientific and qualification work in the form of a thesis for a scientific degree Doctor of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) on specialty «8D07502 – Standardization and certification (by industry)».   • Description - The purpose of the discipline is to give basic ideas about the general laws of the development of science, to form the ability to use specific methods of scientific activity in the field of Oriental Studies. The discipline forms the theoretical foundations and practical skills of scientific research for the analysis of current problems and processes in the countries of the East at different periods of development and ensures that doctoral students receive professional training in the field of scientific research methodology that allows them to successfully work in the chosen direction. The training course is aimed at developing the methodological culture necessary for the organization and implementation of scientific research and pedagogical activities in the field of Oriental Studies.

Discursive Analysis of the Oriental Text in the Modern Context

  • Description - The purpose of the discipline: to form the ability to identify the linguistic features of various texts and types of oral speech, a sequence of social interactions and narrative structures. The training course forms interdisciplinary approaches and skills in the application of discursive analysis methods, the theory of speech acts, sociolinguistics of interactions, ethnography of communication, and pragmatics. During the course study, students will have the ability to:: - identify and propose a description of the linguistic features of various texts and types of oral speech; - in the works of interdisciplinary nature compare the sequence of social interactions and structures of the narrative; - - to systematize the forms and functions of the language, the internal connections of written texts and colloquial speech of the language community; - use interdisciplinary approaches and skills in the application of the linguistic, social, ethno-communicative, and other theories in the implementation of independent research and discussion of their results in the professional community.   • Description - he purpose of the discipline is to form the ability to analyze the lexical and grammatical features of the scientific language of the studied language; apply information technology in practice to generalize scientific information, build new scientific facts in the context of general knowledge in the studied oriental language; present the results of scientific research in the form of scientific articles and reports in the native and oriental languages. The discipline is aimed at studying the differentiation of the scientific vocabulary of the language being studied in the areas (historical, philological, socio-cultural); the main grammatical problems characteristic of scientific and professional speech in the studied oriental language; epistemological, cognitive and communicative function of the scientific style; features of the academic and popular science sub-styles of the language being studied.

Intellectual History of the Orient

  • Description - The purpose of the discipline: to form the ability to analyze and interpret the social and intellectual context of Eastern societies, questions of cognition, genesis and development of sciences, ideas, creative activity of society, social history. The training course forms the skills of interpretation and assessment of the specifics of Eastern thinking. During the course study, students will have the ability to: - identify, as an introduction to independent research, the socio-intellectual context, the issues of education, the genesis and development of new sciences, philosophies, directions, creative potential of Eastern society; - interpret, in the preparation of lecture and review materials, and evaluate processes and phenomena that occurred in the history of intellectual thought of the studied country of the East; - explain and correlate the issues of the socio-intellectual context of countries and regions of the East, civilizational and cultural interaction of the East and the West in the proposed studies on the culture of the studied region; - identify the main trends and driving forces in the development of the intellectual history of the eastern region under study as a theoretical rationale in review articles; - demonstrate the skills of a scientific interdisciplinary analysis of ideas and teachings, which are a complex system of moral, social, political, philosophical and religious ideas and concepts of Eastern civilizations and cultures when developing recommendations for specialists from related or other professions. During the course study, students will have the ability to: - determine, in written or oral form, the relationship and interaction of language and identity by the method of discursive analysis; - construct in an accessible form a holistic view of cultural, linguistic, social processes, phenomena occurring in Eastern societies, affecting ethnic, mental, humanitarian, religious aspects of the East peoples life in performed scientific and popular science materials; - illustrate the possibilities of modern scientific methods of knowledge and apply them in professional activities; - demonstrate creative thinking, involving significant independent preparation, independent exchange of views, scientific discussions in native and foreign languages. - interpret various aspects of identity, such as gender, ethnic and religious affiliation, social class, education, upbringing and culture in public speaking and scientific publications. The training course forms the skills of a scientific historical and cultural analysis of ideas and artifacts, a theoretical and methodological basis for understanding the source-study base on topical issues. During the course study, students will have the ability to: - Identify the problem, formulate hypotheses and tasks of a specific historical and cultural research, develop a research plan, select the necessary and most optimal research methods; - analyze the sources of spiritual and material culture, content, value systems, features of the genesis of cultures of Eastern societies and their development from antiquity to modernity and offer the results of their analysis for professional discussion; - efficiently process the obtained results, clothe them in an accessible form, analyze and reflect on them taking into account the available scientific achievements in the field of culture and the modernization of the East in domestic and foreign Oriental studies; - while writing research projects, critically evaluate the processes of formation of lifestyles, historical conditions for the emergence of spiritual and material culture, socio-political and cultural orientations, types of material and cultural consumption and post-industrial modernization of the East. - compiling survey works, systematize the processes of cultural modernization of the East. During the course study, students will have the ability to: - formulate hypotheses and tasks of studying the proposed written sources and test them; - apply the theoretical and methodological principles of oriental sciences in the analysis of specific texts in different genres; - use specific methods of source research to work with sources significant for the history of national science and culture and for Eastern countries; - conduct an effective search for specialized literature in Eastern and Western languages in the field of source study to create their own research base; - prepare scientific reviews, annotations, to make abstracts and bibliographies on the subject of the research. - systematize bibliographic descriptions, main bibliographic sources in Western and Eastern languages and create search engines using modern technical means.
